Hoka arrives in 2026 with its most anticipated release. The Cielo X1 3.0 coincides with the sponsorship of the Zurich Marató de Barcelona and brings a clear message: we have heard the complaints.
Because there were complaints.
Version 2.0 was a brutal rebound shoe, but too many runners abandoned it over long distances because of instability in the heel. That strange feeling of rocking backwards when standing, that insecurity that appeared just when there was the most fatigue, penalized the muscles at the worst possible time. Hoka has completely redesigned the geometry of the base to solve exactly that.
The result is a shoe that is still explosive but now gives you confidence. More predictable. Safer.
...what's inside of it.
The midsole combines two layers of PEBA foam of different densities: the upper one provides reactivity, the lower one a little more control. In the middle goes the full-length carbon fiber plate, with a winged design. These side wings are not aesthetic: they are responsible for providing extra support on landing, and explain much of the improved stability compared to the previous generation.
The profile is 38 mm in the heel and 31 mm in the forefoot, with a drop of 7 mm. By not exceeding 40 mm, it complies with World Athletics regulations without a fair margin, but with slack.
The weight is the lowest in its history. 213 grams in standard size for men, between 175 and 179 for women.
The upper is another big change. Hoka abandons the plastic touch material that was so criticized in 2.0 and adopts a cross-woven fabric called Leno weave, more breathable and more pleasant against the foot. The tongue is thin and noticeably longer, wraps the instep well, and the lacing system is asymmetrical.

The outsole dispenses with traditional rubber in favor of compression molded polyurethane parts. Those who have already tried it say that the grip is outstanding: sharp curves, paint lines, wet asphalt. Without a doubt.
How it behaves in the race
The fit is pure competition. The last hugs tightly and the finger box is narrow, with no room for expansion. Regular size, but knowing that it is tight.
In motion is a catapult. The MetaRocker profile pushes towards a fast cadence and rewards those who enter mid-foot or forefoot. When the fatigue comes and the technique gets worse, the back is still relatively narrow and can demand something more, although it has nothing to do with the brutality of 2.0 in that regard.
Alternatives if you are not convinced
If the narrow last or the aggressive character does not fit, the Hoka Rocket X3 is the logical choice within the same brand: it also has a carbon plate, but with a more traditional, more stable and more accessible design. Outside of Hoka, the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4 appears in the specialized comparisons as a reference to take into account.
The launch price is 275 euros.
